April 12, 2018

The April 5 issue of The Free Press front page headline “Living off government” would have been better titled “Living off taxpayers.” As we’ve been reminded many times, governments have no money other than that taken by force or threat of force, or via the printing press (inflation).

I searched in vain for information as to whether the majority of those so living were “newcomers” who move to the Valley and go on the dole, or whether “old families” have just fallen on hard times. That aspect of the story would have made interesting reading.

The front page of the March 22 edition announced “Taxes going up.” Am I the only one who sees a connection? We’re talking about more than $64 million last year with an increase anticipated this year.
