Feb. 7, 1957

    The body of Saylor (Peach) Huffman Lutz, 61, who lived near Conicville west of Mt. Jackson, was found lying face down in Swover Creek in his home community about 4:30 p.m. Sunday. The body was found lying in about six inches of water…hospital pathologist in Winchester told officers that he did not believe death was caused by drowning. He was the son of the late Martin Luther and Josephine Amanda Lutz. He was a veteran of WWI. Surviving are four children, three brothers and three sisters. Burial took place in Arlington National Cemetery.

 

Feb. 28, 1957

    Married. Miss Nancy Steadman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. I. Franklin Steadman of Mt. Jackson, and Mr. Martin H. Cannon Jr. of Washington, D.C., Jan. 22.

    Mrs. Anna Lee Link Hepner, 30, wife of Mr. Leonard Hepner of 23 Underwood Place, N.W., Washington, D.C., was fatally injured in an automobile accident Sunday night at 7:45 o’clock in Clarke County on Route 340 in a two-car smash. Her husband, Leonard Hepner, son of Mr and Mrs Charles Hepner of the Conicville section suffered lacerations of the forehead and right knee. Mrs. Hepner was born at Toms Brook, a daughter of Mrs. Stella Link Coffman and the late Russell Link. Surviving are a daughter Sandra Lee and a son Larry Link Hepner, and her mother. Burial was in Saumsville cemetery.

 

April 4, 1957

    A grand jury in Shenandoah County Circuit Court indicted Chester Wheeler Frye, 33, on the charge of “feloniously killing and murdering” Harry Cleary, 64, in Mr. Cleary’s home at Hudsons Cross Roads, west of Mt. Jackson on Feb. 27…The commonwealth contends that Cleary was burned to death and that Frye did the burning. Frye, who lives in the Front Royal area, has a wife and four children.  Cleary lived alone as a bachelor.

    Mrs. Verlin R. Proctor Jr. of Shenandoah Caverns announces the marriage of her daughter, Gloria Ann, to Davis Coiner Rosen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde C. Rosen Sr. of Mt. Crawford on April 20 in Hagerstown, Md.

 

May 2, 1957

    In Shenandoah County Circuit Court on Tuesday, a jury found Chester Wheeler Frye, 33, not guilty of having murdered Harry Cleary, as charged.
