Charles Paxton Funkhouser poses amid the stalks of the corn crop that won first place in Shenandoah County’s first corn growing contest in 1910. The contest was the brainchild of Warren L. Duncan who arrived in the county that year to start a local chapter of the YMCA. During his time here, Mr. Duncan also created a relay race that attracted 121 boys who ran from New Market to Strasburg, and he encouraged the hiring of the county’s first agricultural agent. Mr. Duncan left Shenandoah County for employment with Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey.
