Photo courtesy of Rosemary Wallinger This photograph looks southeast across the railroad tracks in the direction of Main Street in Mt. Jackson. The building in the foreground is the Mt. Jackson Depot, for years after the Civil War a destination for travelers on their way to the healing springs of Orkney. The three-story building in the background was during much of the 20th century home of the People’s Bank of Mt. Jackson. That building was torn down in the early 1970s to create a site for a single story bank building that remains there today. Dr. J. I. Triplett, physician, businessman and philanthropist, built the bank building and placed in its cornerstone a manuscript describing his life. The manuscript was revealed when the building was razed. In his concluding paragraph, Dr. Triplett lamented that despite his successes, he had spent much of his life a lonely man. He wrote: “I have long yearned for the consortium of a good woman.”
