Members of the Shenandoah County Board of Supervisors (five men on porch at right) posed with residents of the Shenandoah County Farm in this undated photo, probably taken sometime in the 1930s. The farm at that time was home to about 40, nearly half of them children. Among the supervisors is Russel Hamman (center), grandfather of Marjorie Hudgins, who loaned the picture. The man and woman standing on the porch at left probably were farm managers at the time. The farm, until about the 1970s Virginia’s last remaining almshouse, was a refuge for generations of homeless residents of this county. Many spent their entire lives there, working the fields and the kitchens, helping to generate enough farm income to offset the cost of its operations. A pauper’s cemetery that includes unmarked graves is located along the northeast property line on Teaberry Road, a final resting place for those known then only as “the poor.”
