Early in the 20th century and before the Old Valley Pike had been macadamized, the storefronts along the east side of the 100 block of South Main Street in Woodstock looked like this. T. Glenn Lock operated a general merchandising business at the corner location, Gibbs Hardware was next door and W.M. Calvert sold men’s clothing in the space adjacent to the Hotel Woodstock. The sign above the door of Gibbs Hardware says the company represented a firm that manufactured a device to separate cream from milk. Mr. Gibbs was affectionately known as “Carload,” a nickname he earned by frequently apologizing for being out of a particular item but insisting that he had “a carload on the road.” |
