It was the summer of 1955 when three lifeguards at the Woodstock Park swimming pool tried to raft over the swollen waters of the Shenandoah River at Burnshire Dam, east of Woodstock. A bystander, Eddie Burnshire, hoisted Jack Bauserman to the old iron bridge after the boys’ raft broke apart, but the other two, George Riley and Eugene Lineweaver, grabbed onto trees downstream and were eventually rescued. In this photo, Jake Haun Jr. of Woodstock (between the trees) was attempting to swim with a rope to one of those stranded. That attempt failed, but expert boatsman Buggs Helsley eventually rescued Riley and Lineweaver unharmed. Woodstock’s recreation park today memorializes Riley’s father, W. O. Riley, a former mayor.
