Turner Updike, owner of this sandwich and cold drink stand (top) along US 11, north of Toms Brook, posed with a Mr. Coons (left) and Randolph Updike for this photograph about 1929. The three boys at right are Ben, Wayno and Harold Updike, grandsons of Randolph Updike. The three boys (inset) got together recently to celebrate the 90th birthday of Harold (left). Wayno is 88 and Ben 86. The former sandwich stand has been unoccupied since at least the 1960s when Interstate 81 opened and shuttered many businesses along the Old Valley Pike. It operated in the 1940s as a Piney’s, a place commonly referred to in those days as a “beer joint.” Note the Nehi cooler on the porch and the baskets of apples out front.
