The stretch of U.S. 11 through Meems Bottom, south of Mt. Jackson, looked like this before it was paved in the 1920s. Overhead utilities along this stretch of roadway have since been taken underground. A French military engineer named Crozet constructed the road in 1835-40. It followed an old Indian war path from New York to south Carolina. Rude’s Hill in the distance was one of Stonewall Jackson’s strategic campsites during the Civil War.
