The newspaper business has changed significantly since 1925 when this photo was taken inside the composing room of The Shenandoah Valley, a paper founded at New Market in 1807 and continuously published until 1973. Cases of hand set type are visible at left, and forms used to lock up full pages of lead cast from Linotype machines are in the foreground. Of interest is that of five people in the room, only the printerís devil (second from left) is not wearing shirt and tie. The Shenandoah Valley office was located on the east side of South Congress Street, about six lots south of Old Cross Road. The Shenandoah Valley was merged in 1973 with The Shenandoah Herald to create what today is the Shenandoah Valley Herald.
