North Main Street in downtown Woodstock was a bustling center of business in the 1950s when this photo was taken. Walton and Smoot Drug Store then occupied the ground floor of a three-story building adjacent to the historic county courthouse. North of the drug store were the Ideal IGA Supermarket, Newsstand, Golladay Jewelers, Nelson Lynn Appliances, Schmidt’s Drug Store, Valley Flower Shop, Peer and Brill Motors and Dellinger Funeral Home. On the east side, First National Bank of Woodstock was on the corner. North of the bank were Ben Franklin, Snyder’s Cleaners, Western Auto, Shenandoah Restaurant, Dorothy’s 5 & 10, Shenandoah Sporting Goods, Pangle Insurance, Woodstock Printing Co., Duke Shaver Pianos, Chamber of Commerce, Community Theater and Post 199 American Legion. Of those businesses, only Walton and Smoot, Snyder’s Cleaners, Valley Flower Shop and Community Theater remain downtown.
