These Shenandoah County men, Confederate Army re-enactors, turned up at Rude’s Hill, north of New Market on June 25, 1965 to mark the 100th anniversary of the shooting deaths of Capt. George Summers and Sgt. Newton Koontz. Years after the Civil War, a monument was erected at the site where Koontz and Summers were shot by Union troops after being accused of stealing horses, a crime they denied. The war had ended by then. Remembering their sacrifice were (from left) Frank Beazley, Joe Miller, Johnny Mathias, Rudolph Moomaw and Capt. D. Coiner Rosen.
