SJ dedicates grid field to retired coach Krol

Posted 2018-10-04

Stonewall Jackson High School will play its home football game Friday at Dick Krol Field.

The Shenandoah County School Board has approved a resolution naming the playing field at the county’s southernmost high school after its long-time coach.

It is the second such facility to bear the name of a coach. Strasburg High School years ago named its football field in honor of Glen Proctor, who coached there from the 1960s into the new century.

Dick Krol retired from coaching football at Stonewall Jackson after the 2015 season. He had coached there for 28 years.

In 300 games, Krol’s teams had won 142, lost 152 and tied six. In his final game, the Generals defeated Page County.

His teams won three district championships, two region B titles and twice appeared in state semi-final games.

In retirement, Krol continues to coach Stonewall’s track team.

A New Jersey native, Krol moved to Virginia with his family at age 9. He attended Staunton’s Robert E. Lee High School, Bridgewater College and the University of Virginia. While coaching at Stonewall Jackson, he taught math.
