Coach says Colonels post grad team likely to be among top 5 nationally

    Massanutten Military Academy will offer local basketball fans a preview of its 2017-18 post-graduate program Saturday.

    The Flying Colonels will play an intra-squad game at 5 p.m. as part of a weekend of homecoming festivities at the academy.

    Post-grad coach Chad Myers says the Colonels are loaded with talent again this season. Myers says his team could end the season as a top five post-grad program in the nation.

    His roster already includes two players who have signed with Division I program, and D1 coaches have been beating a path to Woodstock to scout others on the 17-player roster.

    Tyree Martin, a 6-6 guard, has committed to Rhode Island, and Rasir Bolton, a 6-3 guard, has signed on to play for Penn State.

    Bolton is from Richmond, Martin from Allen, PA.

     Coaches thus far visiting MMA in search of talent have come from Virginia Tech, Pittsburgh, Maryland, Penn State, Boston College, James Madison, Richmond, VCU, UVA, Cincinnati, Georgetown, LSU, Oklahoma State, Villanova and Auburn. Division II schools have been represented, too.

    Five of Myers’ players are from Virginia, including Bolton. Other home-state players are Roanoke’s Joseph Keenan (6-3, guard) ,Haymarket’s Isaiah Mosley (6-2, guard), Chesterfield’s Terrence Whitfield (6-4, guard), and Reston’s Marcus Cherry (6-2, guard).

    Washington, D.C. players are Mekhi Long (6-7, guard/forward), Chris Smalls (6-3, guard) and Gus Okafor (6-7, guard/forward).

    Matthew Forbes (6-2, guard) is from Pittsburgh.

    Arneet Singh (6-6, guard/forward, and Chaz Woods (6-1, guard) are from Saginaw, MI.

    Others are Isaiah Salter, (5-11, guard), Concord, NC; Noah Wimbush (6-6, forward), Fairdale, WV; Naheed John, (6-7, forward) Hyattsville, MD; Miles James (6-6, guard/forward), Los Angeles, CA; Mahamadou Diawara (6-10, center), Mali, Africa.

    The Colonels will play an exhibition game against Virginia Academy Wednesday at 7 p.m.    

    MMA will take part in the National Prep Showcase Nov. 17-18 in New Haven, CT, and the Marshall Country Hoopfest in Benton, KY Dec. 2-3.
