Falcons’ ranking improves

Central at No. 6 after Mason blowout
Posted 2017-11-02

Undefeated Central improved its position in the Virginia 2A power rankings this week.

The Falcons, ranked sixth a week ago, moved to No. 5 after trouncing George Mason in Woodstock a week ago.

Among Virginia 2A teams, Central is one of only four still unbeaten eight games into the season. R. E. Lee High of Staunton, ranked No. 9 a week ago, vaulted into No. 2 this week after defeating previously unbeaten Riverheads, the defending state 1A champion, 21-7.

Should Central defeat Riverheads Friday, the Falcons would be expected to improve their power rating considerably.

Central’s ranking has been affected through much of the season by what has been considered a weak schedule.

Virginia 2A power rankings currently are:

Graham (Bluefield) 7-1 (23.8)

R. E. Lee (Staunton) 7-1 (22.8)

Appomattox County 7-1 (22.5)

Union (Powell Valley) 8-0 (21.4)

Central (Woodstock) 8-0 (20.2)

Goochland 8-0 (19.0)

Giles (Pearisburg) 7-2 (17.8)

Glenvar (Salem) 8-1 (17.7)

Luray 7-1 (16.8)

Ridgeview (Clintwood) 7-1 (12.5
