Stonewall runners win regional title

Generals’ Mary Clanahan tapped as cross-country coach of the year

    Stonewall Jackson’s women’s cross-country team has won the 1A regional championship and its coach, Mary Clanahan, has been chosen Region B coach of the year.

    The Stonewall Jackson team posted a score of 47 in a meet at Panorama Farms Tuesday. Rappahannock came in a distant second at 62 followed by Riverheads in third place.

    The Generals’ LuLu Funkhouser finished the course in 21:21 for second place and a shot at state competition. Eli Dellinger and Susannah Garber finished sixth and eighth, also qualifying for states.

    In men’s competition, Stonewall Jackson scored 61, six points behind first place Galileo High.

    Zach Wine was eighth and Hayden Kennedy ninth to qualify for states.

    Meanwhile, Central’s men’s team won the Bull Run District meet to advance to regionals. Central’s top runners, Mason Lucy-Speidel, Gus Wightman, Sawyer Lucy-Speidel and Chase Rimel were named to the all-district team.

    The Bull Run and Shenandoah districts held their cross county district tournaments a week ago. The Bull Run District tournament was held on the Clarke County course, and the Shenandoah District tournament was held on the New Market Battlefield Course.

    Central boys took first place with 28 points.

    The top four teams advanced to the regional.

    Central girls finished second with 62 points, and the Central team advanced to the region.

      Falcon runners taking all-district honors include Jaclyn Cardoso, Aliyah Kibler and Grace Dellinger.

    Strasburg’s team failed to qualify for the region tournament, but Tyler Zimbro and Anthony Cadle  made all-district and will compete in the regional tournament as individuals.

      Central women taking all-district honors were Jaclyn Cardoso, Aliyah Kibler and Grace Dellinger.

     Strasburg’s Rachel Palmer also was named to the all-district team.

    LuLu Funkhouser, Stonewall Jackson High School, made all-district in the Shenandoah District.

    Stonewall Jackson High School boys came in seventh. The girls placed third. Both teams had an automatic berth to the 1A regional tournament.

    Top Stonewall Jackson male runners were Tristan Williams, Juan Arrocena-Jacuinde and Zach Wine. Top female runners were Funkhouser, Eli Dellinger and Susannah Garber.
