MMA post-grads win season opener, 97-64

    Massanutten Military Academy’s postgraduate basketball team defeated Scotland Sports, 97-64 Saturday to tip off its regular season at Memorial Gymnasium in Woodstock.

    Led by 6-3 guard Resir Bolton’s 27 points, the Colonels got an early lead and never trailed. Bolton was six 6 for 15 from the floor, including three from long range, and12 for 14 from the free throw line.

    Point guard Isaiah Salter added 14 points, five assists and four steals.

    Terrence Whitfield, a 6-4 guard, scored 11 with three rebounds and two steals.

    Mahamadou Diawara a 6-10 center, had six points, eight rebounds and three assists.

    The Colonels shot 41 percent (32 for 78) on field goals, 33 percent (11 for 33) from beyond the arch and 65 percent (22 for 35) at the line.  They had 48 rebounds and 21 steals as a team.

    MMA coach Chad Myers said the team “played hard and did a good job of sharing the ball.”

    Before the season began, MMA played two scrimmage games, the first against Virginia Academy. In that one, the Colonels got off to a slow first half, twice trailing by 14 points , but came back in the second half for an easy victory.

    The second scrimmage was against national top five Oak Hill. MMA won by 12 in a low scoring game.

    The Colonels will be at home against Washington Academy today at 7 p.m. and then Sunday at 3 p.m. against Prestige Prep.
