Local cross-country runners to compete at state meet

Posted 2017-11-16 By Larry Beazley

Stonewall Jackson’s teams had a winning day at the 1A region cross-country tournament held at the Panorama Farms Course in Earlysville last week.

Stonewall Jackson’s girls finished first and the boys took an unexpected second place. Both teams qualified for 1A State Tournament Saturday at the Great Meadows Course in The Plains.

Four Stonewall Jackson girls and four boys made the all-region team. The fifth runners for both the girls and boys finished in 18th place, narrowly missing all-region honors.

Lu Lu Funkhouser finished second, (21:21), Eli Dellinger, sixth, (22:390, Susannah Garber, eighth, (22:13), and Melissa Oczkowski fourteenth, (24:50), each earning all-region honors.  Rounding out the girls’ team that will advance to the state tournament are J.J. Dellinger, 18th, (24:55), Ella Hervo-Smith, twenty-fifth, (25:55), and Isabell Dellinger, twenty-sixth, (26:06).

It will be Funkhouser’s fourth straight appearance in the state tournament. A year ago she finished in fourth place and earned all-state honors.

Garber, Oczkowski, Hervo-Smith and J.J. Dellinger are making a return trip to the state event.

Coach Mary Clanahan credited the success of the Stonewall Jackson boys team to seniors Hayden Kennedy and Juan Arrocena-Jacuinde who “rallied the team.”

Said Kennedy: “I do not want my career to end today” and was the Generals’ rally point.

The SJHS boys beat the Riverheads team for the first time this year.  Kennedy, up until this meet, had never earned a medal but finished the day with one.

Making all-region for the boys were Zach Wine, eighth, (18:39), Hayden Kennedy, ninth, (18:47), Tristan Williams, 12th, (18:52), and Juan Arrocena-Jacuinde, 14th (19:00).

Rounding out the Stonewall team making the state tournament are Reilly Hughes, (19:19), Garrett Estep, (20:13), and Riley Gonzalez, (20:49).
